Choosing Lip Augmentation
March 8, 2018 - Rhys Branman, MDLip augmentation is a deceptively complex subject. Most patients would love to have a permanent solution to full sensuous lips, but the lips are a very sensitive area. Most often it is simpler to use injectable fillers for better results. So although there are many choices, I prefer injectable hyaluronic acid or Silikon 1000. The hyaluronic fillers I prefer are Juvéderm® or Restylane®. For a more permanent solution, I prefer Silikon 1000 to lip implants.
One would think lip implants would be an easy solution for lip augmentation, however lip implants can be a bit hard and stiff, and patients say they can feel them. Palpability is the word used for being able to feel the substance or implant. Lip augmentation surgery is more invasive than one would think. It is also hard to reverse when an implant is used; it’s hard to get the original shape of your lips back, whereas with temporary fillers, lips revert naturally. Also, implants require 2 -3 weeks of recuperation beyond initial recovery time and it takes a while to see the ideal results. Many lip implants have been taken off the market over the years because they either protruded though the skin or caused other complications. So although some implants may be getting better (softer, less capsular contraction) there is reason to be suspicious.
For a more permanent lip augmentation, I believe Silikon 1000 has better results. In very small amounts that are injected using the micro-droplet technique, Silikon 1000 is very precise and has very natural looking results with very little chance of migration. This form of lip augmentation is permanent, so you do not have to come in every 4 -6 months for injections as you would have to for temporary hyaluronic fillers. It is for just this reason that it is a good idea to begin with hyaluronic fillers, in order to be sure you will be happy with a more permanent solution. It is imperative to only have Silikon 1000 injections performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon who is competent with the micro droplet technique because of the danger of over filling. This technique requires that you come in for several injections over a period of time, but there is no downtime and very little discomfort. If you want permanent results, this is the filler that is not absorbed by the body over time. Silikon 1000 has been approved by the FDA for retinal detachment, but has become very popular for lip augmentation.
