Valentine’s Day is coming around again, that day when red hearts and kissable lips are presented with abandon on cards and decorations. First acknowledged by the ancient Romans, Valentine’s Day was a holiday ruled by Cupid, the son of the Goddess Venus. Famous for his bow and his sharp aim at the human heart, Cupid would cause people to fall in love when shot with his golden arrows.

But Cupid’s Bow has lent its name to a part of the anatomy thanks to William Shakespeare. Can you guess which one? No, not the heart, the delicate border of the upper lip. The double curve of a human upper lip has come to be called Cupid’s Bow, after the Roman god of erotic love. Shakespeare made this association in his famous epic poem Venus and Adonis.

For pity now she can no more detain him;
The poor fool prays her that he may depart:

Bids him farewell, and look well to her heart,
The which, by Cupid’s bow she doth protest.
