Exercise and Cosmetic Surgery
February 26, 2016 - Rhys Branman, MDWhen it comes to recovery times, all patients that have recently undergone elective cosmetic procedures would agree that shorter is better. According to Dr. Branman, a cosmetic surgeon in Little Rock, there are a number of things you can do to prepare for your recovery period and help shorten the time it takes you to get back on your feet, back in the office, or back in the gym.
Many people focus on the postoperative period and do not realize that the things they do before surgery can dramatically boost their body’s ability to bounce back and recover. By being in better shape, men and women improve their cardiovascular function and their body’s ability to deliver blood products that help speed healing and reduce inflammation. As such, it is important to spend some time in the gym before spending a few hours in the operating room. The most important exercise you can do right after your procedure is to spend a little bit of time relaxing on the couch.
Recovery time varies depending on the procedure: for a face lift, Little Rock cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Branman, recommends 10–14 days relaxation. Within a few days or after the first week, you can start slowly back to an exercise regimen that starts out with walking for a few minutes each day. You will not be able to push your body after your surgery as hard as you did before for at least 6 weeks and as long as 6 months.
Be sure to discuss any exercise program with Dr. Branman before starting to ensure that it is right for your particular situation and postoperative recovery needs. If this is not appropriate for you, he will be more than happy to provide suggestions that can help you feel better quicker.
