From Italy Comes The Combination Of Science And Beauty

Verona, Italy is the home of the Renaissance when and where art and science met. Verona is also the home of the literary characters Romeo and Juliet. Much as a brow lift or eyelid lift can enhance a facelift, so too can combining rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. Dario Bertossi, MD of the University of Verona studied just that. Bertossi, the lead author, reported his research in the March issue of JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

90 people who had combination surgeries of rhinoplasty (nose) and genioplasty or mentoplasty (chin augmentation) were followed for three years. The Italian researchers found that having these surgeries in combination not only improved general aesthetic proportions of the face, but also proved more stable than having either procedure alone. In these procedures, there are often subtle changes over the first two years, particularly with the nose. By having the procedures in combination, however, more stability is achieved. 45% of the patients who had chin reductions had no changes, and 52% of the patients who had chin enhancement had less than a millimeter of change.

We must always take the size and shape of the chin into consideration when performing rhinoplasty, so it is not unrealistic to consider reshaping the chin too. Of course, this is not always necessary, but it is nice to know that the combination of surgeries have been found to achieve successful results. Having two or more procedures simultaneously saves on office visits, recovery time, and follow up care. There is also less risk involved than undergoing anesthesia more than once. Combining surgeries not only saves you money, but often the results you want cannot be achieved with just one procedure. Here are some examples:

• A facelift may be enhanced and complemented with blepharoplasty or a brow lift

• Breast augmentation is often helped by a breast lift

• A buttocks lift is enhanced by the liposuction to harvest fat from your abdomen, back, thighs, or hips
