Is There Such a Thing as a Perfect Breast?
November 7, 2023 - Rhys Branman, MDAs one of the most popular procedures with some of the highest patient satisfaction ratings, breast augmentation has helped millions of women feel more confident and happy with their breasts. But what goes into creating a “perfect” breast? Researchers recently decided to find out what factors impact a plastic surgeon’s definition of what an attractive breast should look like after breast enhancement surgery.
The study sought to determine whether specific factors, such as age, sex, and geographic location, impacted the the perception of an ideal breast. 614 study participants from 29 countries were asked to fill out a questionnaire and interact with an online survey that allowed them to alter the shape of a model’s breasts. Demographic data was also collected.
The Results
The surgeon’s responses were widely varied, with the greatest difference in preferences for fullness in the upper pole and areola size in both the natural breast and also the augmented breast.
The age, gender, and practice type of surgeons, on the other hand, seemed to play a large role in breast shape preferences, and more significant relationships in responses were found in these similar demographics.
What This Means for Breast Augmentation Patients
Because it is pivotal to work closely with your physician to determine which options will provide the best results, choosing a cosmetic surgeon whose preferences align with yours and who will take into account your concerns and goals is important. As the study shows, anything from a surgeon’s age to where he is from can impact his aesthetic preferences.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that there is no standard for “perfect breasts”—the goal of breast enhancement surgery is to help you achieve the perfect breasts for you. This usually occurs at the crossroads between your personal preferences and goals, and your surgeon’s experience and understanding of breast aesthetics.
