Let’s Talk About IPL
July 26, 2018 - Rhys Branman, MDNon invasive procedures have become very popular with cosmetic surgery patients. Intense Pulsed Light is a non invasive treatment that improves your skin. It is also known as photorejuvenation, photofacial, intelligent pulsed light, or Broad Band Light, BBL. This is a photo facial that removes mild but annoying skin imperfections on your face, neck, hands, chest or legs. We offer IPL at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center to eradicate some of these flaws from your complexion:
-
Melasma – that patchy brown discoloration that can occur during pregnancy
-
Port Wine Stains – those deep red birthmarks
-
Broken capillaries – also known as spider veins, often around the nose
-
Vascular lesions – the red appearance in the skin caused by larger blood vessels
-
Fine wrinkles – these are the first wrinkles to show up as we age
-
Age spots – those unsightly brown spots caused by the sun
-
Uneven pigmentation – this can be hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation
IPL is recommended for lighter complexions. It is also on fairer complexions that most of these minor blemishes show up. Darker skinned people have more melanin to protect their skin from the sun. Interestingly, many of these problems are caused by the sun and yet we can use light to heal the damage from light. So how does it work?
Specific frequencies of light are applied to the skin. The IPL machine uses different wavelengths of light that determine the exact depth the rays will reach. This is why I can be precise with Intense Pulsed Light treatments. The light is absorbed by the darker spots in the skin, the port wine stains, or age spots, or spider veins. These brown and red pigmented cells are then warmed up creating a twofold result. It destroys the targeted cells, which are then absorbed and passed out of the body, and the heat creates new collagen growth, which over time, plumps up the skin. I had written about the latest clinical studies, in January. These studies reported there is now evidence that with continued treatments, the skin actually can become healthier and younger. So stop in for your consultation to see if you are a candidate for IPL treatments.
