Maintaining Liposuction Results

February 26, 2018 - Rhys Branman, MD

Liposuction After photoExercising is the most important factor in maintaining your results from liposuction. After liposuction, at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, you can begin light exercise after 2-3 weeks, but it is important that you give yourself time to heal for best results. For best results do not attempt to go back to a strenuous work out until at least 4 -6 weeks after your surgery. Always discuss this with the surgeon, and always listen to your body! It may even take about 6 to 9 months for all the numbness and swelling to completely go away after liposuction, but exercise will help. It is a good idea to do cardio or aerobic work outs at least three times a week to burn fat, but it is also wise to do some weight training in order to target the specific area you had liposuction on as well. This not only builds bone health, but also increases the size of the muscles. The bigger the muscles, the more calories you burn at rest. Also, don’t forget that under every curve there is muscle.

To keep the fat off a combination of cardio and weight work outs is best. A good total body weight routine a couple times a week is enough, but three times a week is most effective. Let’s say you have liposuction on your abdomen. Yes, do your tread mill, long walks, run, or whatever cardio work you do, but also add abdominal exercises. One of the most effective abdominal exercises is the bicycle, which targets the ‘six pack’ and the waist. With abdominal work outs, the idea is not to increase the size of the muscles so much, but more the strength of the muscles. This builds your core strength and keeps the muscles more prominent than the fat. If you had liposuction on your legs, you would want to concentrate on a lower body anaerobic work out to build the muscles in your thighs and buttocks. If you had liposuction on your arms, you would want to concentrate on bicep and triceps exercises. It is also important to exercise safely. So be sure you get the go ahead from your doctor. It’s often helpful to get a trainer to teach you to do the exercises properly so you do not injure yourself. Often gyms provide trainers for a nominal fee. I found a good website at Ask.com outlining exercises by muscle group. So take a look at it.

I want my Arkansas liposuction patients at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center to get the most out of their procedure. So be sure to follow my recovery instructions carefully, and then maintain your results.
