News About Juvederm

January 6, 2016 - Rhys Branman, MD

Woman's FaceLittle Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center is looking forward to a new product from the Allergan Company. For years we have used Juvéderm® to help minimize our patients’ wrinkles. It’s a great product, and we may have a new one to look forward to.

Earlier in the year, the Allergan Company announced they hoped to release their new product, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC, at the end of this year. The good news for patients and the Allergan company depended upon the FDA advisory panel voting to recommend approval. The advisory panel did indeed recommend approval back on May 1st. In most cases this leads to FDA approval. So what’s the big deal? How is Juvéderm® Voluma XC different than rest of the Juvéderm® family of products?

The big news is that this will be the first dermal filler that is approved for loss of volume in the mid face. Aging leads to fat loss in the face, and loss of this volume is one of the factors that causes an aged look. Thus far facial fillers have only been approved for injection into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur, such as nasolabial folds. This new product is expected to be approved to do more. The recommendation was that Juvéderm® Voluma XC be used to restore volume from fat lost to the mid face. This would make it the very first FDA approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler for the mid face. While it is true that dermal fillers have been used off label for this purpose, this will be the first time the FDA approves a filler primarily for this use. Of course, we will not know for sure until the FDA does approve the product, and hopefully there will be no other difficulties in the production and distribution of the product after that. Allergan is a good company so we expect all to go well.

What does this mean to you? So called liquid facelifts at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center will be even more effective at forestalling surgery for those patients wanting non invasive procedures. So let’s keep our fingers crossed and perhaps we will see this new product by the end of the year!
