What’s Up With Kate’s Nose?

March 27, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Everyone seems to want Kate Middleton's nose lately! The Duchess of Cambridge's face has been splashed all over the media, particularly close-ups on her nose. Needless to say, as a board certified cosmetic surgeon, I am obviously not adverse to performing rhinoplasty, but for goodness sake, don't you want a distinctive nose of your own? All this hoopla reminds me of the Oscar Wilde quote, "Be yourself, everyone else is taken." It is true that corrections of various slight deformities and unaesthetic curves of the nose can improve your appearance. It is important to match a nose to your face,...

Choosing Lip Augmentation

March 25, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Lip augmentation is a deceptively complex subject. Most patients would love to have a permanent solution to full sensuous lips, but the lips are a very sensitive area. Most often it is simpler to use injectable fillers for better results. So although there are many choices, I prefer injectable hyaluronic acid or Silikon 1000. The hyaluronic fillers I prefer are Juvéderm® or Restylane®. For a more permanent solution, I prefer Silikon 1000 to lip implants. One would think lip implants would be an easy solution for lip augmentation, however lip implants can be a bit hard and stiff, and patients...

Recent International Survey

March 20, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
You may have noticed the statistics are in on the new international survey of cosmetic procedures performed globally. The ISAPS (International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) International Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2011 recruited almost 1000 surgeons to participate in a survey. This survey resulted in the numbers of procedures that were most popular in more than 25 countries. The United States recorded the most procedures, however this number may be reflecting the fact that the United States had the most surgeons who responded to the survey, 5,950. Brazil followed closely at 5,024 surgeons responding. China was third with...

Sexiest Part of the Body

March 18, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Some say the sexiest part of the body is the breast, others say the buttocks, and others say the face! When ranked by women, cosmetic procedures most wanted to improve their sex life, breast augmentation comes out on top, followed by lip enhancement, and liposuction, then the famous Brazilian Butt lift . . . of course these were American women. How about in men? Strong arms? Strong chin? Full head of hair? But are anyone of those parts of the body the sexiest? Not sure? In a recent poll, only 53% of people rated the brain the sexiest part of...

Revolutionary New Techniques?

March 15, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Companies constantly develop new cosmetic surgery products with names designed to catch your attention when they are splashed over the media. For instance, you may have heard of Zeltiq or Liposonix, new non-invasive liposuction techniques. The process of Liposonx uses focused ultrasound to heat the fat to 131 degrees Fahrenheit, which is then said to be removed by a process of phagocytosis  where the white blood cells ingest foreign particles, the fat in this case. Whereas, Zeltiq or Cool Sculpting involves freezing the fat cells, which cause their death. The fat cells are then processed out of the body in...

Avoid Cheap Fillers and Botox

March 13, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
We have seen ads online offering dermal fillers for sale at cut rate prices. So have unscrupulous, and untrained people who are quite willing to make a buck offering you their services. Advertisers like this are not authorized to distribute legal products in the United States. Often the drugs are counterfeit, in other words, you don't know what you're getting. Also, anyone can buy them. A number of arrests have been made of people representing themselves as doctors for giving illegal injections over the past couple of years. The United States is tougher on injectable fillers than other countries. For...

Ethnicity, Wrinkles, and Eyelifts for African Americans

March 11, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
In general, Caucasian skin develops wrinkles sooner than African American skin. Although this is true of most of the face, African Americans develop wrinkles around the eyes at about the same rate as Caucasians. However, African Americans tend to develop ptosis, or drooping of the eyelid sooner than Caucasians. This is particularly true of the area where an angle is formed by the meeting of the upper and lower eyelid, at the inner eye, even though ptosis (drooping) of the eyebrow occurs later than in Caucasians.  At the same time, traditionally, African Americans have been more wary of elective surgery...

The SMAS Lift – The SMART Lift

March 8, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
It used to be that facelifts only involved the skin on the face. The surgeons, in the good old days, would simply cut the skin and pull and tighten the skin of the face. Hence the wind-blown look in the old movies, Hollywood Blvd? But the skin would fall again. There was nothing to support the skin with this kind of facelift. I'd like to talk about a few kinds of facelifts you might hear and wonder about. You may have heard of the "Thread Lift." This so called "non surgical facelift" is supposed to correct the sagging without surgery....

Compression Garments

March 6, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
You may have noticed in my recovery blogs I mentioned Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center patients having liposuction, breast augmentation, or tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) would awake to find themselves wearing binders, tape, or compression garments. In doing my exploration of these products, I found a company called Veronique. From cotton breast wraps to torso binders, this company creates great products. During your surgery, I measure you to double check the perfect fit you will need, and you are supplied with the Veronique's compression garment appropriate for your surgery to wear going home. You may want to get a look at...

Skin Care & Laser Resurfacing

March 5, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD
Everyone wants beautiful skin. The youthful unblemished skin you had as a child is the ideal. But sun damage, aging, wrinkles, acne, or scars, detract from the natural beauty of your skin. Extensive sun damage multiplies your risk-the possibility of skin cancer. Laser resurfacing can correct most of this damage. In order to understand long term skin care after laser resurfacing, it is important to understand what ages your skin in the first place. Some of the things that age your skin are genetic factors, the environment such as radiation from the sun, and general lifestyle related external factors such...
