Banish Cleavage Wrinkles With Injectable Treatments

November 7, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
Injectables are great for achieving a wrinkle-free face. They can also be used to smooth other parts of the body, like a woman's chest, reports ABC News in New York City. As a woman ages, the skin between her neck and chest may become crepey and wrinkly. Some cosmetic surgeons are using BOTOX® or Dysport® to battle cleavage wrinkles. “If you look at princes and queen and gowns, they all try to highlight that area,” said cosmetic surgeon Dr. Misbah Khan of Sadick Dermatology in New York City, which offers décolletage rejuvenation. Kathleen Clyne, 58, noticed she had creping in...

Popular Facial Rejuvenation Techniques Effective As Anti-Aging Hand Treatments

October 27, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
The back of the hand can reveal a person's age as easily as the face or neck, but what cosmetic procedures can combat signs of aging there? Cosmetic surgeons are now using many facial rejuvenation techniques as anti-aging hand treatments. The techniques are approved by the FDA to treat the face, but can be used as off-label treatments for other areas of the body, including the hands. “As we age, our hands tend to lose their firmness and volume and the veins and tendons become more pronounced,” said Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, a dermatologist and fellow in the American Academy...

Cosmetic Surgery Skin Care No Match for Needle and Knife

October 21, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
A test by Express.co.uk found that skin care products can improve your appearance, but not to the extent that cosmetic surgery can. The website had a tester try several cosmetic surgery skin care products for reducing lines and wrinkles, firming skin and plumping lips. The results were not as good or as long-lasting as cosmetic surgery procedures. For example, a cream that contained peptides to plump lips did instantly add volume. Dr. Michael Prager, a cosmetic surgeon in London, said that while the cream works as a quick fix and hydrates lips, is unlikely to be a long-term solution. A...

Courtney Thorne-Smith Helps Teach Consumers Facts About Botox

October 14, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
Almost 11 million treatments of BOTOX have been administered since the injectable was approved by the FDA almost 10 years ago, and in that time perceptions about the drug have changed. Courtney Thorne-Smith is helping Allergan, the company that makes BOTOX, educate consumers on facts about BOTOX, as well as changes in perceptions about the injectable. For instance, since FDA approval, the number of women who believe that BOTOX is an effective way to treat frown lines between the eyebrows has increased from 21 percent to 79 percent in 2010. Additionally, women, including Thorne-Smith, have become more open about getting...

New Study Compares Varicose Vein Treatment Options

October 5, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
If you suffer from varicose veins, treatment options include removing the vein with surgery or a non-surgical laser vein treatment. A new study found that the two options are equally effective at treating the unsightly leg veins that can affect blood flow. As many as 35 percent of adults have complications from varicose veins, and researchers said both treatments equally improved the severity of the disease and the patient's quality of life. In addition, patients were satisfied with both treatments. "Our opinion is that both procedures can be equally offered to the patients with great saphenous vein insufficiency," said lead...

The three-a-day capsules use blends of natural foods extracts that are said to work by activating the genes that improve skin tone. Independent researchers told the New Scientist that the preliminary results are intriguing, but stressed the need for published results in a peer-reviewed journal. Created by Unilever in the United Kingdom, the company commissioned four studies to test the pills, and 480 post-menopausal women in Britain, France and Germany participated in the trials. After 14...

September 13, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
BOTOX® treatments combined with the Obagi Nu-Derm skin care regimen results in higher patient satisfaction compared with patients who had BOTOX® treatments with placebo, according to a clinical trial. There was also a greater improvement in overall facial appearance among those that used the Obagi products. Obagi Nu-Derm works at the cellular level by exfoliating and stimulating cell turnover, so skin “behaves” and looks younger. September 6, 2011 - Rhys Branman, MD
The FDA has reaffirmed the safety of silicone implants and said that it would work with manufacturers to improve studies gauging the health of women who have received the implants. In 2006, the FDA lifted a 14-year ban on silicone gel-filled breast implants and approved the implants made by Allergan and Mentor for breast reconstructive surgery and for breast augmentation in women 22 and older. The New York Times reported that after two days of discussion about the safety of silicone implants, Dr. William Maisel, of the FDA’s Center for Devices, said he had heard nothing to shake his faith in the...
