Reasons for Breast Augmentation Revision
January 10, 2014 - Rhys Branman, MDYou might wonder why a woman would choose revisional surgery of her breast augmentation, but women do choose it more often than one might think. Revisional breast surgery is sometimes necessary due to capsular contracture, displacement, or rupture, but often revisional breast surgery is completely elective.
No one expects an implant to last a lifetime. Implants are not lifetime devices. For example, Mentor’s silicone implants come with a 10 year warranty (if it is medically indicated to be replaced) and they even offer to replace the other implant upon surgeon request. Usually implants last 10 to 20 years; however, as you age your body changes. Don’t forget, gravity keeps pulling at us all. Many women find that they would like to have their implants adjusted to match the changing proportions of their bodies. Often this involves a breast lift as well.
As it turns out 37% of all breast revision surgeries in the United States are due to the patient wanting larger implants! Often women feel they do not want their breast augmentation to be very conspicuous, but after the swelling goes down, many women feel they should have had larger implants to begin with. Some of these women wait several years to go up a size, while others have revisional surgery sooner. This is one reason honest, direct communication is important, but sometimes you just don’t really know you want a larger size until later. Other women later decide to go down a size, but most often the revision is to increase the size.
Another reason women seek revisional surgery is to swap out to a newer model. I know it sounds funny, but new devices are being developed all the time. For instance, now that Mentor makes an Ultra High Profile silicone implant, many petite women want the comfort of an implant with a smaller base that will fit their chest size better. There is no reason one should not feel comfortable and have precisely the implant she wants.
Arkansas breast augmentation patients can request revisional surgery at Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center for any of these reasons. We do not want to perform unnecessary surgery, but we are willing to keep our patients happy. Of course as a board certified cosmetic surgeon, I am ready to help whether revisional surgery is medically indicated or elective.
