Recent International Survey
March 8, 2018 - Rhys Branman, MDYou may have noticed the statistics are in on the new international survey of cosmetic procedures performed globally. The ISAPS (International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) International Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2011 recruited almost 1000 surgeons to participate in a survey. This survey resulted in the numbers of procedures that were most popular in more than 25 countries.
The United States recorded the most procedures, however this number may be reflecting the fact that the United States had the most surgeons who responded to the survey, 5,950. Brazil followed closely at 5,024 surgeons responding. China was third with 2,000 reporting in. Essentially, this means a full 45% of cosmetic procedures are performed in the United States. Results from IMCAS, a French-based group of surgeons stated that cosmetic surgery was up 10% in 2012 and predicted another 10% increase in cosmetic surgery worldwide is predicted in 2013.
So what procedures were most popular? Of non surgical procedures BOTOX® topped the list, and hyaluronic acid fillers coming in second. Not surprising at all. Juvéderm® and Restylane® are particularly great products! The top 5 surgical procedures were:
1) Lipoplasty (liposuction)
5) Rhinoplasty
Interestingly, if when counted by continents, Asia had the most cosmetic procedures and North America the second most cosmetic procedures. Europe came third and South America fourth. So although the most procedures by country are topped by the United States and Brazil, we have to believe this may also reflect the populations base requesting procedures .
