Social Media & Cosmetic Surgery

May 9, 2018 - Rhys Branman, MD

Recently, Nightline reported on a 37-year-old Triana Lavey, an American television producer, who had undergone a Facebook Facelift last year. But primping for the social media scene is not limited to the United States. In India, Nikita Sharma, 21, opted for rhinoplasty to improve her online image and stated the surgery had created more job opportunities and marriage proposals!  However, one wonders just how many marriage proposals a gal needs. Grazia Magazine, a fashion magazine from Great Britain, has dubbed this trend ‘virtual vanity.’ It’s true, social media is global.

Many people are even meeting for the first time online these days with Facebook, Skype, LinkedIn, and other social media. Online dating services have become very popular as well. It’s not only looking good online, but there has been 42% rise in people consulting social media sites when seeking facial cosmetic surgery.

Social Media and Cosmetic SurgeryChin implants have risen 71% in the past year. Correcting for a weak chin is the most obvious cosmetic procedure people are seeking to improve their online presence, with rhinoplasty running a close second for those seeking to be more photogenic. Others are seeking jaw line reduction, while cheek augmentation and lip augmentation or reduction are some of the procedures sought from those desiring to be ‘camera ready.’

Is this healthy? For some patients, yes. For some younger patients who seek more facial symmetry or proportion, a social media site may have merely triggered a longstanding desire to correct a facial flaw. Or for older patients who may have put off rejuvenating procedures until prompted by so many self portraits, surgery can be sought realistically. For those who want to look like celebrities, or who lack basic self esteem and want surgery to “fix” their lives, no, it is not healthy. It is important to know why you want cosmetic surgery. At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, we want to help you be the best that you can be.
