The Michelangelo Approach to Cosmetic Surgery

December 2, 2013 - Rhys Branman, MD

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”  Michelangelo

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”  Michelangelo

These are two famous quotes by the artist Michelangelo. His approach to sculpture wasThe Michelangelo Approach to Cosmetic Surgery to bring the beauty that was already in the stone out, to reveal it. This is how cosmetic surgery should be approached as well. Each face is unique, a miracle of genetics. And each body had its own specific logic, a one of a kind masterpiece. It is true that certain lines and proportions are considered more aesthetic than others. The way the shapes of limbs or features, and lines of the silhouette create the composition of the body may fit classic proportions to more or less of a degree. You may have read The Mathematics of Beauty. So the question becomes, how do we attain these ideals?

Observing the vertical to horizontal line in any part of the body, and then the body over all is a beginning guideline. What we look at here is the proportions of your body – lower compared to upper half. And then consider what might create a more proportional body shape. Of course this is what you have probably thought about looking in the mirror. There are many proportional body types, not just one. And this is true of facial features, too. You may have heard about the basic body types: Hourglass, Pear, and Apple are most well known. If your basic shape is Pear, more hips than shoulders, weight carried in the buttocks and thighs, you probably have considered liposuction of the thighs or lower body, and depending on your breast and shoulder size, breast augmentation to enhance the upper part of your body. If you have an Hourglass figure, you may have found that excess fat around the waist has obscured that shape, or perhaps your breasts seem a bit too large to be comfortable. Abdominal fat is often a problem for those with the Apple body shape, and sometimes a combination of liposuction for the belly in conjunction with breast augmentation can bring out more aesthetic proportions in this body type.

But truthfully? The beauty is in there. At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center our goal is to reveal your own natural beauty. Arkansas cosmetic surgery patients usually know what they want! Sensitivity to the aesthetics of proportion is actually hardwired in humans. A cosmetic surgeon’s job is to know the precise way to draw this out.
