Tummy Tucks Require Recovery Time

February 25, 2016 - Rhys Branman, MD

tummy tuck before and aftertummy tuck before and after Tummy tuck. The words make the procedure sound cute, don’t they? Actually, the procedure is known as an abdominoplasty. Sometimes I think the words are deceptive. Like an surgery, an abdominoplasty requires recovery, but the recovery time will certainly be worth it. Take a look at the Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center before and after gallery to see. Often the results are quite dramatic.

The amount of time for that recovery will depend on how much surgery has been done. Abdominoplasty is commonly combined with other procedures such as liposuction or a breast lift to create better body contouring. Often quite a bit of skin is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and fat is removed. Initial recovery time can require from two to four weeks, and one can expect to resume most activities, barring strenuous activity, in four to six weeks. It will take several more weeks to feel completely normal. During the first week or so, you will be required to wear a compression garment to give support to the abdominal area.  A full abdominoplasty involves tightening the abdominal muscles, so it does take time to recover. The amount of recovery time will also depend on your health and physical fitness. Sometimes patients are frustrated during the recovery process, and I wonder if those little words, tummy tuck, are not partially responsible.

In some cases only a partial abdominoplasty, or mini-tuck is needed. A mini-tuck only involves removing excess skin and tightening it. Of course this requires less recovery time. But you will still need a couple of weeks for initial recovery. Generally recovery time for a mini-tummy tuck is about the same as for liposuction.

Abdominoplasty works. A tummy tuck does indeed remove excess or sagging skin from your abdomen, as well as excess fat, and it tightens the muscles of your abdomen. Your abdomen should remain firmer and flatter for many years, if you do not gain or lose a large amount of weight. If you want results be sure to observe post operative instructions and take the recovery time needed. If you are going to invest in your body, invest the time too. If you want a tummy tuck, we will discuss your individual goals, and your individual needs in our consultation, in order to tailor the perfect procedure for you.
