We Use Only US FDA Approved Botox

October 16, 2020 - Rhys Branman, MD

In November 2012, the Food and Drug Administration wrote a letter to at least 350 medical practices that may have purchased drugs that were either contaminated, unapproved or counterfeit. These medications included BOTOX® that was not approved by the FDA. Counterfeit or unapproved botulinum products that do not have the proper FDA warnings and Medical Guide on the packaging are certainly trouble. BOTOX® should always be bought from the manufacturer, not a foreign supplier, as many of suspected the medications were. Apparently a company called Canada Drugs, a company that also used the names Quality Specialty Products (QSP), A+ Health Supplies, QP Medical, Bridgewater Medical, or Clinical Care, supplied the unapproved products to the US medical practitioners who were warned by the FDA. Of course, the FDA urges medical practitioners to purchase drugs from either reliable American distributors or the manufacturing company itself. It is fortunate the FDA is this vigilant and that letters were sent out to the offices known to have purchased questionable BOTOX®.

However purchasing questionable drugs is not always inadvertent. Recently, a doctor in California even closed her practice because of a dispute with a business partner over using a cheaper version of the drug bought from Germany. Dr. Vicki Belo was later honored at a dinner given by the Allergan Corporation for her actions. Dr. Belo said that some of her patients had complained that the counterfeit BOTOX® was much more painful. At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center BOTOX® is purchased from the US-based Allergan Company directly, the company that manufactures BOTOX®.
Remember, if the price is too good to be true, be skeptical. If injections are offered in a non medical setting, run, don’t walk away! You can even ask your doctor to show you the package.

Getting the best products is only one of the many reasons that choosing a board certified cosmetic surgeon for injectables is your best choice; he or she is not going to risk their license with fake BOTOX®. Individual states govern who can legally administer BOTOX®, in the United States. This means that although some states only allow licensed physicians to inject BOTOX®, other states allow other health care practitioners to administer BOTOX®. In Texas, Florida, New York, Oklahoma and Florida are examples of states that allow people other than doctors to give injections of BOTOX®, however it must be done under the supervision of a doctor. What this means is if you do not know a is doctor on the premises of a medical spa, it probably is not a good idea to have injections there. In Arkansas, many trained medical professionals such as registered nurses, as well as cosmetic surgeons, dentists, dermatologists, nurse practitioner, and physician assistants can administer BOTOX®. The point is this: if not a licensed physician, the person injecting the BOTOX® must be specifically trained and a doctor must prescribe the drug, and you should be sure of this. That is why you are always safest at a board certified cosmetic surgeon’s office. You want someone who will only buy the correct product. And FDA approved BOTOX® is only made by the Allergan Company.
