Why Saline Implants?

November 7, 2023 - Rhys Branman, MD

Some women prefer saline breast implants. Saline breast implants are made by theSaline Implants Mentor company in the United States, and they have a great track record, I might add. The implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. Our bodies are made of over 60 percent saltwater, about 50 quarts of saltwater. Obviously a natural substance, the saline implant is the very safest implant you can get. This is one reason some women prefer saline implants. Now silicone implants are safe; this is why the FDA allowed them back on the market in 2006; however, some women are still a bit worried. It is perfectly understandable if you feel this way.

As for the saline implants, Mentor delivers the implants empty. The implant is filled with the sterile saline solution after it is put in place. This means a smaller incision is required, which in turn means less of a scar. This is another reason some women prefer saline breast implants. The implant is then filled to the recommended level. The self sealing valve automatically closes making less need for manipulation by the surgeon while you are in surgery. And not to worry, saline implants come in various sizes, textures, profiles, and shapes just like silicone implants.

A third reason some women prefer saline implants for breast augmentation, is again related to safety. On the off chance a saline implant leaks, deflation is immediately noticeable. Remember, the risk of saline breast implant deflation is only 1% per implant per year. Also with saline breast implants, there is no need for follow up MRIs every few years. So this saves a bit of money down the line. As a matter of fact, saline implants cost a little bit less to begin with.

As for looking natural, saline implants that are placed under the pectoral muscles can look and feel just as natural as silicone implants. And if you are thin, you will want them placed under the muscles. The common concerns about saline implants are rippling and a potentially unnatural feel. At Little Rock Cosmetic Surgery Center, we take all the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of visible implant rippling. Filling implants to the proper specifications is very important in this regard. The issue of looking natural really depends on the skill of the cosmetic surgeon.
