Semaglutide Weight Loss Injections in Little Rock, AR

Semaglutide is now a household name as a safe and effective weight management solution. At our practice, Nurse Practitioner Crystal Marcussen oversees our Weight Management Program and specializes in administering semaglutide injections in Little Rock, tailored to meet individual weight loss goals for safe and significant results.

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that mimics the action of a hormone naturally produced in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Semaglutide was initially developed for type 2 diabetes management, but is now also FDA approved for weight loss for obese and overweight patients.

How semaglutide helps you lose weight

Semaglutide binds to GLP-1 receptors in the brain, which regulates appetite and food intake,  decreasing hunger and increasing feelings of fullness after eating. This leads to a reduction in overall calorie intake, naturally putting you in a calorie deficit—the only state in which you’ll lose weight.

Semaglutide weight loss injections also slow down gastric emptying—the rate at which your stomach empties its contents into your small intestine—so you’ll feel fuller for longer and with less food intake. Even greater outcomes are achievable when patients prioritize healthier, nutrient-dense food choices, and become more active.

Benefits of semaglutide for weight loss

Aside from substantial weight loss, semaglutide has also been shown to improve blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of cardiovascular events.

Patients taking semaglutide typically find that they can go longer in between meals, are satiated with smaller portions, and have fewer cravings for sugary, high-fat foods, further contributing to weight loss. This is a unique advantage over calorie-restrictive weight loss methods—you will not feel starved and thus be less likely to engage in binge eating or give up on your weight loss efforts. Plus, semaglutide can help your body gently acclimate to the right proportions for your body and help break the food habits that may have been previously sabotaging your goals.

Our Weight Management Program

Your consultation

The first step of our weight management program is a one-on-one consultation with Crystal. She will discuss your medical history, review any medications and supplements you take, and order lab work to ensure weight loss injections will be successful for you.

Your injections

If you are a good candidate for weight loss injections, Crystal will record your weight and body measurements, and take photos to use as baseline data to track your progress. Your first injection will be given in-office, where Crystal will also teach you how to administer the rest of your injections at home. The once-a-week injections can be given in the upper arm, hip, or abdomen—we recommend alternating between each injection site to prevent tenderness in one area. If you prefer to have Crystal administer your injections, we’ll schedule a weekly appointment in our office.

You’ll start with a low dose, gradually increasing to the target dose (typically 2.5 mg per injection) to minimize potential side effects.

Treatment duration

Most patients follow a 6-12 month treatment plan. This timeline typically gives the body enough time to adjust to the medication and reach a stable, maintainable weight. Depending on your starting weight, your treatment duration may be longer than 12 months in order for you to achieve a healthy weight and to see greater improvement in other health markers such as blood sugar levels and insulin secretion. Crystal will provide an estimated treatment duration using your baseline data and adjust her recommendations based on your progress.

Ideal candidates for medical weight loss

Ideal candidates for medical weight loss are individuals struggling with obesity or those overweight with weight-related medical problems. If you take certain medications or have a family history of certain conditions or cancers, you should not take semaglutide. Crystal will thoroughly examine and discuss your health history and status to help ensure your safety.

Expected results

Most patients see noticeable weight loss within the first few weeks of treatment, with continued improvement each week. Once you are at your target dose, you’ll see the greatest fat reduction. On average, patients lose between 5-20% of their body weight. Your individual results will be influenced by several factors including:

  • Your starting weight
  • Your diet and exercise habits
  • How long have you been taking the medication
  • Any underlying health conditions

Because semaglutide helps you become more aware of your body and become accustomed to smaller, healthier portions, most patients who continue to eat mindfully and remain active are able to maintain their weight loss long after their treatments end.

Possible side effects of semaglutide

While semaglutide weight loss injections are generally safe, some may experience side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. These are typically mild and temporary. Crystal is always available to help manage any side effects and ensure the treatment is both safe and comfortable.
